Folks, my pipes are still frozen, and my car battery is dead, a friend’s furnace is broken, and the weather is supposed to remain cold until at least Wednesday. So please bear with me… these may turn into more expenses, and it will take time to get things back up… so please keep an eye on the schedule and the forum for any updates, and bear in mind that if things turn really nasty I may lose my internet and phone and therefore ability to communicate.
If nothing else, I hope you have some way to keep warm!
You know we’ll be thinking about you and offering prayers.
Our heat is fine…it’s the ability to flush a toilet, or use my car to get things, that’s the problem. And it’s not supposed to be above freezing until Wednesday before the next round of cold… a very short window to get things fixed.
Thank God for the heat! 2021 was the nightmare down here in Texas without it. The rest does get messy. If Shiloh has enough food, that would take a lot of worry out of the situation.
We’re food fine… and have a little water… but can’t get out of the house with the battery dead, and no way to flush toilets
I’ve never tried to melt enough snow for water to flush toilet so IDK.
Hurricanes give us a lot of buckets for that ordeal.
I know there’s folks here with ideas so will let them at it.
Hang in there, Dr. I know it’s terribly uncomfortable and downright aggravating!
You and Shiloh are both in our prayers, and we pray that these things will get sorted out before long!
Gosh, it reminds us of your comments on the last vidchat, where someone asked about “preparedness”, and your thoughts about preparedness being a good idea were sensible. And, no sooner do you utter these thoughts, and then you get nailed by the cold.
During the covid nonsense, we weren’t let into stores because we wouldn’t mask, and so that was our chance to find out which grocers and other businesses offered home delivery services. Perhaps your experience with the car battery may also put you in the path of a home delivery service that you can use temporarily until things are back in order, (and we’re also praying that a good neighbour can help).
We set up a “composting” toilet as part of our “preparedness” project, which consists of a small steel bucket (with a lid) filled with straw, and works fantastic in a pinch (we store it outdoors in a shed). No flushing needed, and it turns into compost which can be buried in a spot in the yard, or put near a tree. (We have a separate outdoor compost bin for just that).
On a more cheerful note: a couple of days ago, we ordered 5 of your books from Lulu (the 4-part theological tome plus your fiction book) – looking forward to reading them! Hopefully that may help a little with your bill for getting the battery fixed!
Thanks sunny boy…I hope you enjoy them. In the meantime, thanks for the prayers and thoughts. It just shows that in spite of preparedness, or doing everything correctly like leaving the faucets dripping and the cabinets open, they still froze. And being prepared with my 12v battery jumper also didn’t help, since the battery is still dead. lol
Hahahaha my first Hillman had a crank start in case the starter motor went down. I do remember using it too in the winter months!
I saw a tictoc post discussing a second (worse) cold snap on the way end of Jan…more like the one we saw in 2021. Single digits and below zero again in N TX. Expect worse power outages than this storm. BTW, power out, no well pump in 2021, I broke the ice on my above ground pool, bucketed water and used that to flush toilets / water chickens. If there’s a pool nearby…something to think about. Ashes removed from fireplace/woodstove in a metal bucket can be a heat source IF USED AWAY FROM COMBUSTIBLES. A bit like heating bricks in the fireplace, transporting as a heat source.
Is there anyone local you can call to ask for some pails of water + jump start or new battery?
Our heartfelt and continual prayers go out for you, Shiloh, and everyone else across the frozen plains. Lots of us are in a similar way, and so are our pets. No worries if your schedules and communication are interrupted. The main thing is to stay as warm as possible and for everyone to stay healthy.
Sometimes when I have car issues I tell myself angels are protecting me. I saw your region on the weather channel and the roads look dicey.
The roads are VERY dicey!
We’re glad to hear your car is working, and hope that you’ll get some relief with your water situation soon too.
I’m looking forward to your “God, History & Dialectic” books!
Some months ago, we were in the used bookstore, and happened to pick up a few of Laurence Gardner’s books (and now can appreciate how Dan Brown contructed his novels based on the information in Gardner’s books). I expect/imagine that in your 4-part tome, I am going to read a completely different perspective on early church history than what Gardner presented, as well as a different viewpoint of the Gnostics.
Yes, TOTALLY different. Remember Gnosticism is a TACTICAL TEMPLATE for how to subvert any institution.
