What are they rally up to? 'Greening up' their nuclear arsenal in space perhaps?

Until we get GizaDeathStar running again, nuking the asteroids is the most powerful thing available. But it gets me to wondering what actually happens when a nuke goes off in the thin plasma (vacuum…sort of) of space? On Earth, there are multiple effects; any atoms in the immediate core of the reaction are ripped apart, matter in close proximity to this gets super heated, and further away the concussion of compressed air exerts strong ‘wind’ force on everything.

If the 'splosion happens in space where there is no air, and only the asteroid’s matter is affected, does it get a big nudge to chance it’s vector? There would be no compression wave of air, and the asteroid wouldn’t care about the heat. Hmmmm
