Russia has repeatedly warned the West against arming Kiev, saying that doing so will only serve to prolong the conflict, and risks making Western nations de-facto participants.

There are actually 4 salt mines in the area and they are connected through a labyrinth of deep underground caverns and tunnels. It will take a while to clear them, let alone find what could be hiding there. Some sections are pre WWII.

V. Putin addressed the issue in his recent remarks at a press conference. The Russian military investigated, and sent folks into the salt mines to search out that possibility.
