Words & Phrases that Toxic People Use

I hear you, teacher. Words do matter in this context. To be clear …
As mentioned elsewhere, I teach citizenship classes for people from other countries who seek to become citizens. Registering for the Selective Service is required of male citizens in the age range stated by law. It does not preclude exemptions, deferments, objections, nor does it automatically mean one is inducted into military service. If a draft lottery is instituted, it is an attempt at impartiality in the selection process.

If required to register with the Selective Service, failure to register is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000 and/or 5 years imprisonment. Also, a person who knowingly counsels, aids, or abets another to fail to comply with the registration requirement is subject to the same penalties.

Oh geez President Carter was such a religious man?
Stayed on the books…Seems the catch is register to receive student loans and other government programs. Twenty people have been prosecuted since 1986. The penalty acts as a scare tactic. Good article is below.

After the war in Vietnam came to a close in early 1975, draft registration ended as well. In 1980 President Carter reinstated draft registration as a message to the Soviet Union that US could be ready for war at any time. This is still the law of the land today: all males residing in the US and all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 26 are required to be registered with Selective Service. Registration should happen during a 60 day period that begins 30 days before their 18th birthday. Immigrants of draft age who come to the US are given 30 days to register.[3]

The court case denied by Supreme Court, bounced the ball to Congress who had yet to address the issue

Actually, yes I would have because he made his course and choice quite clear to me in a few conversations we had.

Was this reply meant for me? I’m wondering if it was posted on the wrong thread?

I threw my selective service letter away… Fortunately I never heard back from them… I guess they figured most 18 year old don’t have a spare 250,000 dollars lying around …and mass incarceration of 18 year old kids might backfire… But what I never understood was why they needed me to fill out the form in the first place… They already had my address, age, sex, name, etc. In some States you just check a box when you get your drivers license and that is the registration process… So I almost wonder if its just to see who consents to it, because I can’t think of any practical reason they would have asking me to fill out that form with info they do not need.

Our current surveillance state’s data base knows how to count and locate anyone for any reason. I think the maintenance of the current requirement is a hold over from the 80’s that provides a few bureaucratic jobs for a bureaucracy no longer needed. The war hawks in DC would loose face if they eliminated the requirement and added women.
I registered when I was 18 while in high school. It was kinda considered a right of passage back then and local community standards and patriotism was strong. Luckily the draft was abolished not long after so I was not personally effected by the Viet Nam “operation”, except I knew people who were killed and maimed.

I have been watching the reviews for the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who and to be honest I am reverting back to the Tom Baker years. The showrunner (Russell T Davies) and his sycophantic team have doubled down on The Message narrative. Dalek leader Davros is no longer physically challenged as according to showrunner Davis ‘disabled people are not evil’. And a previous character Donna has a transgender 15 year old daughter Rose. A reviewer has said to just ignore the new series as the left who love the new narrative will just gaslight us anyway. So it is back to Tom Baker and K-9!

So this has thread has reminded me of the language used and how it has been weaponised. And how toxic people love to gaslight.
