I published a book this year called The Alchemical Solfeggio. If you use harmonic rather than Pythagorean frequency values in the ancient hexachord, there’s a relationship between the scale’s SOL and FA (from which the name solfeggio derived) that plugs into Marko Rodin’s mobius circuit as a sort of “motor” driving matter-based energy perpetually. It’s a fun theory to deep-dive (some of this is encoded into Shakespeare) but it does seem to apply to what David Hudson found with ORME, and the fact that 55.555555% of the matter remained in 3D while 44.444444% phased into 2D. SOL is 5 and FA is 4 in the solfeggio hexachord.

The Circle of 5ths is really a spiral of ascending 5ths and descending 4ths. From this foundation, a new 9-centered reality is built in parallel to that of the octave of 3 and 6. This is the foundation the Sumerians built from with their D-centered scale, moving out and back in 4th and 5th intervals. The note of D is the 9th harmonic, and focusing on a central (mesonic) D tonic is not simply moving up one whole step from a C-based scale. The note of C is the 1st harmonic, so a move from C to D is a whole world away.

The interval between C and D can be confusing. Is it a 9th? Is it a whole step? What kind of whole step? My first ah-ha moment regarding musical ratios came suddenly when I realized that the relationship of D to C was as the 9th note off the tonic down to the 8th or octave. And that is the exact ratio of the whole step they express: 9:8.

In The Alchemical Solfeggio I discovered a whole step ratio (8:7) of a very different nature, an interval Ptolemy included in his “soft” diatonic tetrachord. Just one difference of this whole step ratio, which is really just the tip of its iceberg, is that it represents the 5 and 4, the 5th and 4th, because in the harmonic series, the 8:7 septimal whole step is expressed by both C (Harmonic 8) to Bb (Harmonic 7) -and- G (Harmonic 24) to F (Harmonic 21), as 24:21 reduces to 8:7. And G and F are the SOL and FA off C, the 5th and 4th.

In the Solfeggio scale, the note positions have the Latin syllables UT, RE, MI, FA, SOL, and LA. It’s where do-re-mi comes from, much later. In the scale, SOL refers to the Latin word solve, meaning cleaning, ie, with a solvent. And there is a solvent ratio in the scale, as well as a solute (SOL+UT) ratio. The scale seems to be a recipe for dissolution.

It depends how you define microtones. The whole step ratio of 8:7 represents C to B flat so those are actual tones. However, SOL:FA is G:F at 24:21 in the harmonic chromatic scale (which reduces to 8:7). And so yes, you could look at harmonic F as a microtone since nobody has ever used the frequency value of 21 (scaled up to 336) for F. Pythagorean F is the value Plato specifically tempers in Timaeus, down to the more common 4:3 perfect 4th interval (341.33), and the Sumerians avoided F altogether by using the key of D and an F# at 45 (scaled up to 360). Not sure what you mean by “alchemic vibes” – perhaps it’s literally just the use of frequency in alchemy (chemical separation). But the phrase sounds a little more pejorative than literal. My work is an attempt to pull alchemy out of the realm of mysticism. Alchemy is a fairly simple endeavor that we’ve painted up as magical thinking. Alchemy is nothing more than purifying salt water or separating gold from a telluride.

Have never studied music but do have an interest in the archaeoacoustics, megalithic structures (medieval cathedral constructions) and non ordinary states of consciousness. What are traditionally considered tombs, megalithic structures such as Newgrange in Ireland (but are of others) which demonstrate multifunctionality other than serving as tombs. Newgrange resonates at 110 Hertz, its geometry means it is felt in the body. Also a sine wave sometimes develops visibly through passage to the main chamber to the portal to the outside. These structures predate the given dates of the pyramids. Anyway I digress too much. I do have a question about this piece of music purportedly medieval if you find any of the harmonic constructions within it. It has always intrigued me and drawn me to it? I will listen to it but it really depends on how the instruments are tuned. If they’re equally tempered, they can play ancient Greek modes or medieval melodies and sound more or less the way the pieces sounded back then, but flatter or more grating. Tempering causes us to lose the ratios. Not the basic “idea” of the piece, just the ratios. So it will be hard for me to know without measuring frequencies, but I’ll give it a listen.

OK, no instruments, so that makes it easier. They warmed up singing vowels starting with the note of B at 242 to 244 Hz four times, then on the fifth vowel, they go up a perfect 5th to F# at 366 Hz. 12TET B is 246.94 and harmonic B is 240; at 242 they’re closer to harmonic / 244 closer to 12TET… they really just split the difference. 12TET F# is 369.99 and harmonic is 352, so here, they’re closer to 12TET. However, the ratio of this 5th is spot on: 1.50 exactly using the 244 value, so they’re singing just intervals. That’s not surprising because unaccompanied voices tend to naturally find just intervals, especially multiple voices. They probably didn’t have a pitch pipe to get them started, but they quickly found the exact right ratio.

The melody line starts with B, then up again a perfect 5th to F# twice, then E - D - E - F# - F#. These notes seem to be in the B Dorian mode and yes, this sounds very much like gregorian chant where the Solfege would have been used. But there’s a but… the Solfeggio would never have used an interval between B natural and F#. That’s OK, this is just modulated from the Solfeggio framework, but no F# was used in the 3 Solfeggio hexachords in medieval times.

BTW, I would love to measure the Newgrange resonance because I highly suspect it’s actually 108 Hz. I could be wrong, of course. :slight_smile:

Solfeggio being in Gregorian chant makes so much sense, given the structural constant found in cathedrals for example, like Chartres but others too. Just meant to say enjoy the song it is a well known Languedoc/Provence hymn amongst other attributes.

Prof Robert Jahn reviews acoustics of Lough Crew (several cairns’ structures) and Newgrange. I been inside the spaces in both sites and they are amazing spaces for sound. However, Jahn measured the acoustics and did spatial surveys of them. Lough Crew in many ways is more amazing than Newgrange, less visited and because it is on private you can rent key for the lock on the Cairn from a local cafe run by the landowners.
